Melting Venus: Potential Geochemical Diagnostics of Mantle Source Depth

چکیده

Introduction Volcanism on Venus has produced a rich array of volcanic landforms [1], which in turn suggests a broad range of magma production and differentiation environments. In the next decade, it is possible that one or more landers associated with New Frontiers or Flagship class missions to Venus will provide new geochemical observations of the Venus surface. The goal of this work is to make an initial assessment of how such geochemical observations may help to constrain magma production depths on Venus.

Geochemical Aspects of the Geological History of Venus

Introduction: The current knowledge of the geological history of Venus can be interpreted in terms of the history of the geochemical environments on this planet. One can distinguish two parts of the geologic history of Venus: the later part, for which we have morphological records supplemented by geochemical measurements on the surface and in the atmosphere, and the earlier part, for which ther...

Evolution of helium and argon isotopes in a convecting mantle

Outgassing of helium and argon and the isotope ratio distribution of helium isotopes in basalts are some of the most important geochemical constraints on mantle structure and evolution, but their interpretation in terms of mantle processes is ambiguous and controversial. Here, the evolution of these isotopes and their radiogenic parent isotopes of U, Th and K are studied using a numerical model...

The statistical upper mantle assemblage

A fundamental challenge in modern mantle geochemistry is to link geochemical data with geological and geophysical observations. Most of the early geochemical models involved a layered mantle and the concept of geochemical reservoirs. Indeed, the two layer mantle model has been implicit in almost all geochemical literature and the provenance of oceanic island basalt (OIB) and mid-ocean ridge bas...

Mantle melting beneath the Tibetan Plateau: Experimental constraints on ultrapotassic magmatism

[1] Phase equilibrium experiments on primitive Miocene olivine leucitite (Bb-107) from the Qiangtang terrane of the Tibetan Plateau were performed from 1.0 to 2.2 GPa and 1270 to 1440 C. The composition is multiply saturated with olivine and clinopyroxene from 1.2 to 2.2 GPa and 1340 C under nominally anhydrous conditions. Phase assemblages in the experiments have been used to model the effects...

Mantle flow, melting, and dehydration of the Iceland mantle plume

Recent studies have shown that the extraction of water from the mantle due to partial melting beneath mid-ocean ridges may increase the viscosity of the residuum by 2–3 orders of magnitude. We examine this rheological effect on mantle flow and melting of a ridge-centered mantle plume using three-dimensional numerical models. Results indicate that the viscosity increase associated with dehydrati...
